The president justified his decision by characterizing the couple’s sentencing as “pretty harsh treatment.” During a phone conversation with the couple’s children, he remarked, “It’s a terrible thing, but it’s a great thing, because your parents are going to be free and clean.”

Harrison Fields, a spokesperson for the White House, provided further insight into the decision in a statement issued the same day.
