Dolly Parton Reveals the Only Time She Ever Struggled to Write a Song

Dolly Parton, one of the most prolific songwriters in music history, has penned nearly 3,000 songs over the course of her legendary career. Known for hits like “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You,” Dolly’s creativity seems endless. But in a rare and emotional interview, she opened up about the only time she ever came close to experiencing writer’s block—and why she’s currently putting songwriting on pause.

Songwriting Is Spiritual for Dolly

During a candid conversation on Khloé Kardashian’s podcastKhloé in Wonderland, aired on July 10, Dolly reflected on what songwriting means to her.

“I love that I can create something… to leave something in the world today that wasn’t there yesterday.”

For Dolly, songwriting is more than craft—it’s a deeply spiritual experience. Her natural talent for storytelling in song has long set her apart, and her ability to turn life’s moments into melody has been both healing and inspiring for generations of fans.

The One Time She Almost Faced Writer’s Block

Despite her incredible body of work, Dolly admits there was one moment she struggled creatively: while working on the music for the 1982 film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

“That story was already written, and I was tryin’ to come up with stuff for that,” she told Khloé. “They were demanding certain things, and there was a time element.”

Unlike her usual songwriting process, where she has full creative freedom, Dolly found it difficult to write under someone else’s direction. The structured nature of film music and the pressure of deadlines made it hard for her to tap into her usual flow.

“It was the first time I was writing under somebody else’s direction… that’s the closest I ever came to writer’s block.”

Dolly Is Pressing Pause on Songwriting—for Now

Although she famously said she has no plans to retire, Dolly revealed that she’s taking a temporary break from songwriting as she copes with the loss of her husband, Carl Dean, who passed away in March 2025 after 59 years of marriage.

“There are a few things now that my husband passed away a few months ago… I have wanted to start, but I can’t do it.”

While Dolly still has beautiful song ideas, she says she’s holding off for emotional reasons:

“I can’t afford the luxury of getting that emotional right now… But I’ll write something else, though, if it comes. I’m just putting [songwriting] on hold.”

Shortly after Carl’s death, Dolly released a touching tribute song titled “If You Hadn’t Been There.”

A Creative Pause, Not an Ending

Even in her grief, Dolly remains an unstoppable force in the world of music, philanthropy, and entertainment. Her temporary pause on songwriting is not a farewell, but rather a moment of reflection and healing.

Fans around the world continue to show love and support for Dolly during this difficult chapter. Her honesty and vulnerability only deepen the admiration millions already feel for her.

Conclusion

Dolly Parton’s openness about nearly experiencing writer’s block—and why she’s taking a break from songwriting—offers a rare glimpse into the emotional side of a legend. Even the greatest creators sometimes need to pause, grieve, and gather strength.

As always, Dolly remains full of grace, wisdom, and heart. And when she’s ready, the world will be listening.

Blake Shelton stood bathed in stage light, singing “Over You” with aching clarity—when Miranda Lambert quietly stepped from the shadows and joined him, note for note, heartbeat for heartbeat. No words. Just music, memory, and a silence so deep it echoed. The crowd froze. Blake’s voice faltered for half a breath. Carrie Underwood pressed her hand to her lips, visibly shaken. It wasn’t just a surprise—it was an unraveling and a healing, all in one song.
